Special Olympics is the world’s largest humanitarian sporting event and a global movement which focuses on the empowerment of People of Determination with intellectual disabilities through the power of sport.
The Special Olympics was started by Eunice Kennedy Shriver, sister to President John F. Kennedy in 1968. Eunice and her husband Sargent first started as a summer day camp in the backyard of their home in Maryland. Having had a sister who had an intellectual disability Eunice was determined to change how the world treated or ignored those who had intellectual disabilities.
The Special Olympics World Games 2019 is being hosted in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates March 2019 for the first time in the Middle East North Africa since the movement’s founding over 50 years ago. There are a total of 16 Haitians participating in this years games in Athletics, Equestrian and of course Football (soccer).
